The Newsom Endorsement

Another Fine Author has already Chronicled Sen. Clinton wowing Scientists in San Francisco.

What I want to Focus on here in this short piece is the Endorsement of Senator Clinton by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

A few of Mayor Newsom's accomplishments are:

1.  39% of San Francisco's Fleet are already converted to Bio-Diesel.

2.  Homelessness down 38% since 2002.  It's worth noting that Mayor Newsom's strategies on this issue exist in stark contrast to Mayor Giuliani's Draconian Strategies implemented in New York in the 1990s.  He's not just Shipping them ouf the City or putting them in Jail.  Here is a list of strategies that will continue to be Implemented by Mayor Newsom to address this issue:

· Expansion of the number of homeless street outreach workers to provide city-wide coverage to transition the homeless from the street into housing

· Increasing the number of permanent supportive housing units through the City's Housing First and Direct Access to Housing Programs

· Opening a One-Stop Employment Center for recently housed homeless

· Establishing a Community Justice Center, in partnership with the District Attorney and Superior Court, to engage quality of life violators in services and housing

· Implementing programs supported by this year's record $19 million federal McKinney Homeless Assistance Grant

Mayor Newsom is now on the Cutting Edge of Localized Implementation of Universal Health Care providing Health Care to Uninsured San Franciscans.

"This is a case of filling a vacuum at the federal level," says Stephen Shortell, dean of the school of public health at the University of California-Berkeley. "We haven't bitten that bullet yet. So we're going to see more innovation in states and municipalities."

And:

The plight of the uninsured has been on the national agenda at least since the 1988 Bush-Dukakis presidential campaign. In the mid-1990s, President Clinton made universal health care a centerpiece of an overhaul plan that failed in Congress.

Now, Newsom says, "shame on both (political) parties. It's complete abdication of any real responsibility."

There is a downside:

"The only downside is it's not portable, you can't take it with you," Newsom says. "But it's precisely the same quality of coverage I get with my insurance."

But what I really want to focus on here is how San Francisco and Mayor Gavin Newsom has been portrayed as a liability for the Democratic Party.   In 2004 Mayor Newsom made sure that about 4,000 Marriage Certificates were issued to Same-Sex Couples in San Francisco.  At the time he was considered Kryptonite for a Democratic Presidential Candidate.

No Candidate was willing to stand with Gavin Newsom at that time.

In 2005, Bill O'Reilly said it was Ok For Terrorists to Attack San Francisco.

"And if al-Qaida comes in here and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. We're going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead," O'Reilly continued, referring to the 1933 San Francisco landmark that sits atop Telegraph Hill.

Now we have a candidate who is not only afraid to stand with Mayor Gavin Newsom but embrace his Endorsement.

Newsom vs. John Edwards (none / 0)

Going into the streets of SF and leafletting for John Edwards was an interesting experience. I actually stopped to speak to a few homeless individuals who spoke very ill of Newsom. They seemed cynical on all the Presidential candidates until I told them what Edwards stands for -helping those less fortunate than himself, apparently not something Newsom has dealt with. Straight from the mouths of 2 able people-One who had worked for Bank of America .The other a security guard for a bank! Both on the streets.

Re: Newsom vs. John Edwards (none / 0)

Let's be honest:  Had Newsom endorsed Edwards, I think it is a very good bet that you and his supporters would now be arguing completely differently.
